    This classic by Harriet Beecher Stowe is published. It is an anti-slavery novel that reflects the conditions of the 19th century. This novel definitely had a great impact on very important events that happened in history - such as the Civil War.

    The main reason why the Civil War started is because of slavery. Eleven Southern slave states declared their secession, which led to the Civil War.

    Emancipation Proclamation
    This proclamation was issued by President Abraham Licoln. It announced the freedom of slaves in the eleven Southern states that declared secession. 3 out of 4 million slaves were freed in the United States.as a result.

    The first Klan was created at this time. They were very violent and hateful towards the African Americans. They made their own white costumes and burned down crosses and did mass parades. Murder also took place in their acts.

    Ida B. Wells published her pamphlet called Southern Horrors: Lynch Law in All Its Phases. It shows all of the lynchings that had been researched upon. She concluded that people use the excuse "raping white women" to hide their true reason for lynching.

    Homer Plessy was arrested in the "White" car of the train instead of the "Black" car. Plessy was 1/8 Black. This case set that seperate facilities was constitutional as long they were "equal".

    The film The Birth of a Nation is a very controversial movie that was released in the 20th century. It was deemed to be very racist, as it portrayed Black men as very aggressive (sexually) towards white women. The organization NAACP tried to convince some cities to ban the film.

    Hocutt v. Wilson
    The Hocutt v. Wilson cse was the first case to challenge the "seperate but equal" doctrine in education. Two African American lawyers from North Carolina that supported the NAACP attempted to desegregate higher education in the U.S. Unfortunately, the case lost, but it served as a test case for their freedom.
  • Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward County

    Davis v. County School Board of Prince Edward County
    This case convinced the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the racial segregation in public schools. This was the one and only case first started by a student. A 16 year-old named Barbara Rose Johns forged notes, telling teachers to bring the students to the auditorium for an important announcement. At the meeting, she persuaded the school to strike to get better schoolconditions.

    This classic nocel by Harper Leereflects the racial injustice of that occured at her time. Her novel is based on her neighbors when she was younger. Her book was an immediate success and a film was released only a year later.

    On July second, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed, banning all discrimination on race, , color, religion, sex, or national origin.

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    This act was signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. It banned racial discrimination in voting. Meaning, people of any race can vote without being looked down upon.

    Black History Month is placed in February. This event is a time of rememberance of the important African American people and events that happened in the past. It was founded by a historian named Carter Godwin Woodson.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day

    Martin Luther King Jr. Day
    This is event is celebrated on the third Monday of January annually. President Ronald Reagon signed this holiday into law. This event is to honor Marting Luther King Jr. and his brave acts in history.
