    The Abolition Movement was a movement where abolitionists worked to try and end slavery in the states. This lasted from the1830s all the way until the 1870s, and abolitionists wanted to end racial social issues.

    The nullification crisis was an event in which South Carolina threatened to seceed from the United States. The state felt as though its states rights were violated after the tariff.
  • Frederick Douglass and the North Star

    Frederick Douglass and the North Star
    Fredrick Douglass was a former slave who became an abolitionist and was known for his writing and speaches. Douglass created a newspaper titled the North Star that was spread across Rochester, New York. The newspaper got its name because slaves would follow the North Star during the night to try and "find their freedom".
  • The Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 helped out California by allowing them back into the Union. California was now free of slavery, also obviously declaring them to finally be a free state. The compromise of 1850 also gave southern states the fugitive slave law which made it hard to help out runaway slaves.

    The Kansas and Nebraska Act created territories in both lands which allowed new settlement for citizens. This was an extremely imporant event leading up to the Civil War. The act allowed states to have the opportunity to be for or against slavery in their state.

    Bleeding Kansas was from 1854 all the way until 1861. During this time those for and against slavery in the state of Kansas and neighboring territories would partake in brutal fights regarding their opinion of the situation.

    The Dred Scott decision was part of the court case against sanford. Scott was a former slave who was now freed and lived in a free state with his slave owner. It was taken to the attention of the Supreme Court in which they decided that no matter where the states were taken, they were still property of their slave owners.
  • The Election of Abraham Lincoln

    President Abraham Lincoln's election caused a stir because it was right when all of the events leading up the Civil War were going on. He won with 180 electoral votes and his mission was to abolish slavery.
  • South Carolina secession

    South Carolina secession
    The south carolina secession was such a big deal because it was the first state to declare their secession and then later on form the Confederacy. A convention was held for legilsature votes and the final anonymous results were 169-0, giving them the ability to seceed.

    Formation of the Confederate States of America
    The confederate states of America was repubic and began with eleven southern states. These states all seceeded from the Union and were worried that with Abraham Lincoln as president their way of life was going to be in danger.
