  • Battle of the Atlantic

    The British navy attempts to blockade German suppliers. However the Germans are able to get supplies from the Soviet Union and in the east. Germany retaliates with U-boat attacks
  • Invasion of Poland

    Germany's first main offensive was this invasion. The Polish army surrendered after three weeks of fighting. After signing the non-aggression pact with the Soviet Union, Hitler had no fear of invading.
  • Britain against Germany

    Britain declares war on the German army after they invade Poland. Chamberlain feels he cannot keep peace. The British public is shocked because they don't even have a substancial army to fight.
  • Battle of Dunkirk

    Battle of Dunkirk
    German forces are prepared to attack France from the coast. Hitlers halts all offensives and allows civilians to evacuate. The British are able to get 338,226 men out of France. This boosted the British morale but left France to defend itself.
  • Fall of France

    Fall of France
    German forces invaded Belgium and the Netherlands. They eventually avoid the main French defensive of the Maginot Line and come into France by way of the Ardennes Forest. France signs an armistance at Rethondes.
  • Battle of Britain

    Germany wanted to rise above the prestigiuos Royal Air Force. This was one of the first battles to be fought entirely in the air. German planes bombed industrial areas and eventually places of political significance to lower civilian morale.
  • Siege of Tobruk

    The Allied fort of Tobruk was attacked by Erwin Rommel and his Italo-German force. The allies needed to hold strong because this port was vital to the control of the Suez canal.
  • German invasion of Soviet Union

    After secret preperations for operation Barbarossa, Hitler gives the green flag to invade the Soviet Union. It was the largest military operation ever, spanning a 2,900 km front. The Germans only ended up holding territory in the Ukraine. They could not battle in Moscow and failed to win battles in Stalingrad, Leningrad, and other large cities.
  • Pearl Harbor

    Pearl Harbor
    Japanese forces attack the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor early in the morning. After the initail shock, the Americans fought back with valor. The Japanese succeeded by severely weakening the American force. They are also able to gain land in the Pacific.
  • Battle of the Coral Sea

    Japanese forces wanted to aquire the rest of New Guinea so they could eventually make an attack on Austaralia. They begin an offensive in the Coral Sea. The U.S. navy comes in and defends the sea. Losses on both sides, including two Japanese ships that will not show at Midway.
  • Battle of Midway

    Battle of Midway
    This battle became a major turnimg point in the Pacific campaign. Only planes did the attacking. Japanese forces backed down and were never able to fully recover.
  • Aleutian Campaign

    As a part of the Battle of Midway, Japanese forces went north and won the Aleutian Islands of the coast of Alaska. Americans became concerned because of the possible attack on American soil in Alaska. We sent in bombers that effectively took back the islands.
  • Battle of Stalingrad

    Battle of Stalingrad
    Germany tries to take Stalingrad. It resulted in the most casualties, over 2 million, in a single battle. Germans received heavy losses and were never able to recover their strength.
  • Invasion of Sicily

    Allied forces prepared to invade Italy. They sent a corspe to Spain that claimed they were planning on invading Greece. Germans took the bait and diverted some of their force to Greece. Allies invaded from the southeastern and south central coasts. Mussolini was toppled from power.
  • Italian surrender

    The Allies hold most of southern Italy and Mussolini is out of power. King Emanuel III initaites the surrender

    As the American force gained momentum in the Pacific, aerial bombings of Japan began. Between our base and Japan stood a volcanic island of Iwo Jima that posed as a threat to the Americans. We had the upperhand and won the island. Both sides had heavy losses.

    V-E surrenderAfter German forces surrendered in Italy on May 2, an Allied victory was eminent. People celebrated in the streets and partied all night long. Others mourned the losses of loved ones. The official document was signed at Eisenhower's headquarters at Reim.

    Atomic Bomb dropped on Hiroshima
    After the Japanese deny any kind of surrender, the U.S. take matters into their own hands. The Manhattan Project comes to life. American airmen drop the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima killing 80,000 civilians.
  • Atomic bomb on Nagasaki

    Atomic bomb on Nagasaki
    The second atomic bomb is dropped killing over 40,000 civilians. Japan would surrender 6 days later.
