This battle was fought by men and women of the Canadian Merchant Navy, the Royal Canadian Navy, and the Royal Canadian Air Force, where more than 4,600 service men and women bravely lost there lives.

    The Battle of Stalingrad started on August 23, 1942. The German Air Force, the Luftwaffe, bombed the Volga River and then the city of Stalingrad. The Germans soon took a large portion of the city. Many Soviets hid among the city in places such as buildings and sewers, attacking the Germans. In Novermber, the Soviets planned a counter attack, and trapped the Germans inside the city. The Germans started running out of food and became weak from freezing in the winter. The Germans later surrendered.

    Operation Torch was the invasion of North Africa, led by Dwight Eisenhower with support of the UK. Winston Churchill and his military were concerned to remove the Vichy French authorities from the territories they controlled along the North African coast before it fell into the German's hands.

    The United States and Great Britian, the leading Allied powers, decided to move against Italy, hoping an Allied invasion would remove that fascist regime from the war, secure the central Mediterranean and divert German divisions from the northwest coast of France where the Allies planned to attack in the near future. They began with the invasion of Sicily July 9th, and 38 days later, the U.S. and Great Britian were successful of moving German and Italian troops from the island.

    Codenamed Operation Overlord, the battle began, known as D-Day, where over 156,000 Americans, Canadians, and British forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile strech along the coast of Normandy, France. The invasion was one of the largest military aaaults in history. The Allies conducted a large-scale deception campaign to mislead the Germans about the invasion target. In the following srping, the Allies had defeated the Germans. This was the begining of the end of the war.

    The Germans had launched a surprise attack, which was known as the Battle of the Bulge. for several days, Hitler's forces threatened to win back vital ground from the Allies. At Bastogne, Belgium came a key moment, which the Germans were determined to take, and also a small force of American defenders. the Americans clung to survival while being in below-zero temperatures and low on supplies. Gerneral George S. Patton arrived to provide relief for the Americans force.

    By april 1945 the Russian army had surrounded Berlin, where Hitler had his headquarters in his bunker. He had decided to make his last stand in Berlin, and not surrender. The generally accepted account is that he commited suicide by biting a cyanide capsule and shooting himself simultaneously. His body (and that of his wife) was then burned with gasoline by his aides. The russian secret service identified his remains by his dental records.
