    Printed in Edinburgh, 1691, this paper lists the English, Dutch, German and Spanish regiments that paraded in modern day Belgium in 1691. Each one of these regiments were under the command of King William III. They all served within the Grand Alliance in the Nine Years' War against France's Louis XIV. This demonstrates how France had the balance of power in Europe and others were looking to change that.

    This painting by Carl Röchling, made in 1904, shows Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, holding the Prussian flag as his armies advance on the Russians. The Battle of Zorndorf took place in 1758 where Fredericks army fought and won against a Russian army twice its size. This was important as it established Frederick as a legendary military commander and put Prussia on the map as a European power.

    This imagine was taken in 1871 after the North German Confederation had defeated. At the time, Germany had been unified under the German Empire. This was not only a military victory but also a national victory as they were now unified.

    The front cover of the Treaty of Versailles is pictured here. Signed in 1919, this declaration of peace ended war between Germany and the Allied powers. Within the document stipulations of acceptance of responsibility, disarmament and reparations angered the German people. It would be this harsh treaty that brought about the destruction and horror of the Second World War

    The picture taken here shows two Soviet soldiers hoisting their flag above the German Reichstag parliament building in 1945. The destruction of Berlin is seen in the distance. This image shows victory over Nazism and Hitler and the end of the Second World War. It also hints at the future and the breakup of Germany and Berlin itself.
