on the 7th October 1854, a miner named James Scobie was found beaten to death not far from the Eureka hotel in Ballarat. The main suspect was James Bentley; the owner of the Eureka hotel. An investigation into Scobie’s death was done and Bentley was arrested but later released

four men robbed the Bank of Victoria on Baker Hill; john Bolton, Henry Garrett, Henry Marriott and Thomas Quinn. They made away with £15,000.

Several people were taken into custody for the burning of the Eureka hotel.

On 29th November 1854 an even larger meeting was held, with the famous Southern Cross flag on display. Miners decided to burn their gold mining licenses the following day in a mass burning on Bakery Hill.

Martial law is established. The miners were taken prisoner and 13 are charged with treason.
