Phoenix Community College was founded on 1920 as a portion of Phoenix Union High School and is one of the oldest community colleges in the country. It became part of the Maricopa Community College system in 1960.

Mesa Community College opens as a branch of Phoenix College. It became independantly accredited in 1965.

Glendale Community College Opens in Glendale Arizona.

Gateway Community College Opens in Phoenix. It now also includes the Maricopa Skill Center.

Scottdale Community College opens in the Fall of 1969 and moves to its current location in the Fall of 1970.

Rio Salado College is established in Tempe.

Chandler Gilbert Community College was founded in 1985 as an extension to Mesa Community College. It was accredited in 1992.

Paradise Valley Community College opens in 1985 with its branch campus at Black Mountain opening in 2009.

Estrella Mountain Community College opens in the west valley and is accredited in 1992.
