  • WWII Generated Issues

    DDT: During WWII, the usage of DDT was used since it did not seem to harm humans or soldiers but killed insects carrying malaria. Eventually used for every single insect. Mercury: Used in Minamata, Japan in a Salmon factory. Factory was re-releasing the Mercury into the water source. Affected sea life which lead to Minamata disease in cats and later in humans.
  • The Great London Smog

    approx. 12,000 people died over 5 days due to the smog in London
  • Silent Spring by Rachel Carson is published

    Silver Spring by Rachel Carson is published which causes outrage that a women is questioning science. DDT banned effective Dec. 31 and Malaria came back. Called "Silver Spring" because (bioaccumulation, biomagnification) the poison travels through the food chain links. DDT does not leave human body but accumulates.
    When malaria resurged in 3rd world countries, people blamed Carson for banning DDT. However, insects developed a resistance to pesticides and DDT.
