    John McCarthy is born on September 4, 1927. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts to John and Ida McCarthy. Both of his parents were immigrants. His father was Irish and his mother was Lithuanian and Jewish.

    Because he was able to spend much of his childhood reading books on Mathematics, he was able to graduate high school early allowing him to attend college at 17 years old. When in college, he skipped a few math classes putting him ahead of his peers. He did not want to participate in the PE classes at the college which resulted in his suspension. He joined the army where he was able to graduate from the college in 1948

    McCarthy started his PhD at Princeton. Instead of asking help from professors for his thesis, he decided to figure it out on his own.

    After graduating, he stayed to teach for two years. His dissertation was on solutions to differential equations.

    McCarthy spent the summer at Bell Labs. Here he was able to write a few papers on Artificial Intelligence before he coined the term.

    During this conference, Artificial Intelligence was established in a professional manner. This is where the term was officially coined because McCarthy needed a name for the research.

    He stayed at Stanford until 2000, when he retired. Here he was able to do more research with mathematics and make more improvements on AI.

The award is given to computer scientists who have contributed to significant progress in the field. John McCarthy was given this award because he was able to contribute significantly to research about AI

    This award started in 1984 by Kazuo Inamori. It is an award for people that made great contributions to the STEM field. He was awarded this because of his many contributions the the computer field.

    McCarthy publishes his predictions and goals for AI in the future. He talks about where he thinks it may be heading and shares his desire to want to see it blossom into something more than what he has done.

    John McCarthy passes away from a heart attack. He was at his home in Stanford. His legacy continues to live on through more current contributions to AI.
