History of Rape is a History of Race

The history of rape crosses ties with the history of slavery. The first slaves were brought in 1619 to Jamestown.Throughout the time of slavery, white slave owners could legally rape the enslaved women. After slavery was declared over in 1865, they used tactics such as rape and other forms of violence to stifle political and civil movements and terrorize the African American people. Please note that racism and sexual violence against people continue today.

History of Sexual Assault in Law

The very first laws regarding sexual assault considered sexual assault a property crime, with the male head of house or entire family as the victim, not just the victim. Eventually laws made rape of a child and marital rape illegal, North Carolina finally outlawed marital rape in 1991. (Rape has existed throughout time as seen in mythology from Ancient Greece, thus the 1800 is not the exact date)

By law, Title IX also requires colleges to notify victims of their options and choices of support. However, colleges struggle as many victims do not feel that colleges will help and so they do not seek help, partly because of the fact that colleges can sometimes take four years to investigate.
