Mach

Ernst Mach (February 18, 1838 – February 19, 1916)

  • Mach Bands

    Mach Bands
Mach publishes on the illusion of Mach bands, which are a result of our senses hyperfocusing on the change in the color of gradients, and becoming less sensitive to plain stimuli (consistent coloring). They can be noted here in this image as vertical lines on the edge of the gradient. • Mach's Principle

Mach postulates that the greater context of the state of the universe affects the small-scale of every day objects. In reality, he states, it is the reference frame you choose which ultimately decides how objects behave. But the universe somehow knows the truth.
  • Supersonic Motion

Mach's interest in the cause of the "double boom" when artillery would fire, combined with explosive nature of the solid metal shell on impact leads him to investigate, and later detail, motion at speeds greater than the speed of sound. • Contributions to the Analysis of the Sensations

Mach publishes his book which explains that all knowledge must be collected using senses. Thus the theory of time, as it cannot be sensed, was open to interpretation. Einstein would later expand on this when developing his theory of relativity.
