Ernest Miller Hemingway, son of Doctor Clarence Edmonds Hemingway and Grace Hall Hemingway, was born on this day.

As a young man living during the era of World War I, Hemingway aspired to join the military. Because of a defective eye, however, he was rejected on several occassions. Eventually he was granted the opportunity of driving an ambulance only to get injured on this date. He was placed in a medical center and fell in love with a woman named Agnes von Kurowsky. Like the military, Agnes also rejected him when he proposed to marry her. This relationship inspired his book A Farewell to Arms.

This year he marries his first wife, Elizabeth Hadley Richardson who would mark the first of four wives. Here is a picture of the two of them with their son, nicknamed "Bumby."

Hemingway and his wife, Elizabeth, travel to Paris because of a recommendation by Sherwood Anderson. During his time in Paris he would write many short stories and other writings. Visiting Europe was very influencial in his writings.

The two met at Dingo Bar in Paris and became friends. Fitzgerald inspired and advised Hemingway in his writings, but eventually they stopped being friends because Hemingway and Zelda, Fitzgerald's wife, had an intense professional rivalry. Here is a picture of the couple.

In Our Time, is published in New York City. This is considered his first important collection of stories. It was first released in Paris, in 1924.

His remarriage with Pauline Pfeiffer, a fashion writer, was only one month after his divorce! Later in this same year he published a story collection (possibly inspired by his love complications) called Men Without Women.

On this date, Pauline and Ernest became divorced. Three weeks later he married Martha Gellhorn, a journalist. The two moved into a Cuban estate and lived there for many years. Out of this experience he wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls.

Martha being involved in the writing field alongside Ernest proved to cause some issues within their marriage. Because of this they decided to separate.

On this day Hemingway and Mary Welsh married. By this time, he already had three children. Mary ended up not being able to have children, however. A few years after their marriage Hemingway produced the most negatively reviewed piece of his works: Across the River and Into the Trees.

Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature on this date and wrote a speech for his acceptance of the award. Unfortunately, he was unable to come to the ceremony due to injuries. He was the fifth American author to receive this award. Here he is accepting the award later on.

On this day in Ketchum, Idaho, Hemingway passed away because he committed suicide. He received a Catholic burial. Here is an image of his and Mary's graves.
