Erikson Timeline

  • I've got this... I think

Jack is three years old and has trouble buttoning up his favorite shirt. He feels bad asking for help after having been shown how to do it multiple times.
In Eriksons second stage of psychosocial development, autonomy vs sham and doubt; a child may feel shame when he fails to complete tasks that result in additional efforts from others to take care of them. A failure to be self sufficient.
  • Math Problem

Ten year old Jack used to love math. He did so well that he was placed into an advanced math course at school, but he started to lose enthusiasm when he saw other students preforming even better than he was.
In Eriksons fourth stage of development, industry vs inferiority, children struggle to prove themselves and show what they have learned while dealing with competition and failure.
  • Just Dance

A close friend of Jack's has recently started dating and has encouraged Jack to ask someone to an upcoming middle school dance and possibly start dating this person as well. Having wanted to go to the dance anyway, he asks out the girl he likes and enjoys the event with her.
In Eriksons fifth stage of development, identity vs role confusion, teens may feel conflicted about who they are and what they should be doing in life.
