  • Period: 410 to 1066

    Old English

    Also called Anglo-Saxon, it started when the romans leave Britain and Germanic tribes as the Angles and the Saxons arrive there (this is where the term anglo-saxon came) laso the jutes arrives but not as strong as the ones I already mention. The romans left some of their language but the Anglo-saxon vocab was much more useful. Christianity and Vikings also made some important contributions to the language. It’s more important and know literary work were Beowulf and the Wanderer.
  • Period: 1066 to 1500

    Middle English

    It was a time were some of the most important English authors made their biggest contributions to the language with medieval romance stories and a religiously didactic content. Also, at this point French was used by the high class people, restaurants and for official business. On the hand, English was used by poor people.and Latin was used at church. This period finished after a long war against France as a result of this war English was taken as the main language in Britain.
  • Period: 1500 to

    English renaissance

    English renaissance had a big influence of Greco-Roman thinkers, also science and exploration, it was a cultural and artistic movement in England. In literature were mainly texts for public performance and books of poetry, its biggest authors were Christopher Marlow, Ben Jonson, Francis Bacon, and William Shakespeare, this last one gave English about 2000 new words and phrases. This period was divided in: Elizabethan period (1558-1603), Jacoban period (1603-1621) and Carolina Period (1625-1653).

    King James order to make a new translation of the bible from Latin to English letting everybody understand it, taking every church in Britain and bringing more words and expression into the language.

    Puritan

    It was a religious movement which purpose was to reform the church. Its more representatives authors were John Milton, Anne Bradstreet (the first published work by a woman in America and England), Edward Taylor, John Dryden and some of their most remarkable works are Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up In America, Preparatory Meditations Before My Approach to the Lord's Supper, Hidden Flame and Mac Flecknoe.
