    During this century, shoes in which the heel was higher than the toe became popular as a more wearable alternative. King Louis XIV of France wore very high shoes. He was famously painted in a pose showing off his shoes with high red heels, which he only allowed members of his court to wear.

    Historians are unsure where exactly umbrellas appeared. Some say Egypt while others say China. What is certain is that they've been around for a very long time.
    It wasn't until the 1600s that European women began to carry umbrellas, mostly as shade from the sun. Sometime in the 1700s it became popular to carry wood and oilcloth models as protection from the rain. In 1750, an Englishman named Jonah Hanway decided to carry an umbrella everywhere he went.

    In 1975, IBM created the first microcomputer ­‐ the IBM Portable PC 5100. It was more self­‐reliant, rather than portable, able to run without a heavy processor.
    The next year: The birth of the first modern-­‐looking laptop arrived with the GRiD Compass 1101, designed by Bill Moggridge to be the ultimate portable computer. It was the most luxurious of laptops only used by high flyers and the public sector.
