    Deer and Elk Committee Meetings

  • Protect the Deer and Elk

A committee was created to protect the deer in Wisconsin while still allowing its citizens to hunt. The Deer and Elk Committee discusses and oversees research projects, different hunting seasons, law enforcement, and restrictions on different seasonal permits.
  • Critical Winter

The past winter was brutal to the deer and elk in hunting grounds. The juvenile deer were damaged the most. In the forest, the survival rate for the fawns varied from 37-63%. To protect the deer population, hunting restrictions will be enforced and a goal was set to increase deer population in the forest to stabalize the balance in the sate.
  • Newly Formed Restrictions

Restrictions were the main point of the meeting. With hunting season closely approaching, the discussions revolved mostly around antler point restrictions, the ban on baiting, and the ban on the ever increasing use of drones. Although most restrictions were discussed to be universal, there was some discussion on having each county decide their own regulations.
  • Anterless Tags

The only discussion made in this meeting was the discussion of anterless tags on farmland areas. Bret Moravitz, a citizen from Barron County, came to pursuade the committee to increase these tags from $12 to $24 or $30. After much discussion on cost and areas, the committee decided to "make 2015
tags public & specific land specific in counties."
  • Success

The past winter was a success with the meeting very short with very few discussions. The meeting had the routine updates from DMAP, research, elk, and law enforcement as well as short discussions on permits to help keep the deer in Wisconsin safe.
