  • The Battle of Liege

    The Battle of Liege
    Citation
    This battle was the first land battle of the war. The German Army crossed into Belgium to attack France from the north. The Germans were attempting to seize the city of Liege, Belgium. The Germans took control of the Belgian forts and then took the city, forcing the Belgian army back. The Germans captured the city on August 20th.
  • The Siege of Antwerp

    The Siege of Antwerp
    This battle came shortly after the Battle of Liege and lasted until October. Germans fought against Belgian forces who were not as strong. The Germans captured two forts and changed the location of the capital. The Germans had control of Antwerp until the end off 1918.
  • The Battle of the Ardennes

    The Battle of the Ardennes
    This battle waas between German and French forces and was one of the Battles of the Fronteirs. The battle began in the Ardennes Forest. Germans built trenches and becuase of the disorganized French army, gained the upper hand. The Germans had iron and continued to advance on the French. In the end, the French lost the battle.
  • The Battle of Bita Paka

    The Battle of Bita Paka
    This battle was fought between Australian and German forces in New Guinea. After an attack against them by the Australians, the Germans retaliated during the night, while the Australian army was sleeping. They destroyed the radio tower as well. Realizing the strength of the Australian forces, the Germans surrenderred to them.
  • The Battle of Tanga

    The Battle of Tanga
    This battle was started by British and Indian forces in an attempt to capture German East Africa. German forces prevailed after the British attempted to march into the town. This battle is also nicknamed "the Battle of the Bees" because of the attacks by bees in the brush. The British retreated quickly and left plenty of supplies behind, giving the Germans a significant victory.

    The British capture of Basra started with the capture of thefort at Fao. The Turks attempted to retaliate but where forced to withdraw The British took the city on Nov. 23rd; this gave them power over Middle Eastern oil.
  • The First Battle of Champagne

    The First Battle of Champagne

    This was a French battle against the German Third Army. The Germans, with a smaller army, faired well compared with the French because of their trenches and strong defense. The battle was put on pause to reorganize and resumed on March 17th. Both sides had equal casualties, but in the end, the Germans retreated.
  • The Defence of the Suez Canal

    This battle was fought between the British and Turks. The Turks attempted to surprise the British and take control of the canal. The Turks ended up loosing many more men than the British and retreated. Because the British werre preocupied with this battle, they were absent from the at Gallipoli and this led to their ally's failure.
  • The Battle of Verdun

    The Battle of Verdun

    This battle was the longest lasting battle of WWI. The Germans attacked the French city in an atempt to draw the majority of French forces to this town. The French heard of the planned attack and prepared forces. The two armies battled until December of the same year, and there were equal numbers of casualties on either side. In the end, the Germans withdrew.

    The First Battle of Gaza
    This battle was between Turkish (commanded by the Germans) and British forces. The British began to lose, believing their attack to be a failure. The next day, with fresh attempts, the British tried to retaliate but ran out of water supplies. In the end, the Turks prevailed and the British retreated.
  • The Fall of Jerusalem

    The Fall of Jerusalem

    This battle was started by the British who attempted to seize the city of Jerusalem from the Turks. After one day the British succeeded. Following the capture of the cit, the Turks tried multiple times to regain control through weak attacks on the British, but the British remained in control of Jerusalem.
  • The Battle of the Piave River

    The Battle of the Piave River
    This was a battle between Austro-Hungarian forces and Italian forces and lasted for only four days. The Austro-Hungarian army lacked in supplies. The Italian army had stronger forces. In the end, this led to the Austro-Hungarians losing this battle.
