Educational Time-line

  • Education Act

    Education Act
    • Provided free compulsory education for 5 to 15 years of age.
    • Further responsibility fell onto the local education authority (LEA).
    • They would ensure: medical inspections; provide milk and refreshments for pupils in attendance; make clothing grants etc.
  • Tripartite System

    Tripartite System
    • Government told local authorities to have three different types of state school: Grammar, Secondary and Technical.
    • LEA's were reluctant to develop and build technical schools due to costs which essentially meant a bipartite system was in place.
    • Grammar schools took the top 20% of children based on an 11+ exam using IQ testing and attainment in English and Arithmetic.
  • General Certificate of Education (GCE)

    General Certificate of Education (GCE)
    • Primarily taken in grammar and fee paying schools.
    • Taken at 16 (Ordinary Level) and 18 (Advanced Level).
    • Designed for top 25% of ability range.
  • Wolfenden Report

    Wolfenden Report
    • This report concluded that the criminalisation of homosexuality was an impingement on civil liberty.
    • Homosexual acts between consenting adults in private should no longer be an offence.
    • However the cabinet opposed Wolfendens recommendations.
    • Became the basis of the street offences act of 1959, which helped eradicate street prostitution.
  • The Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE)

    The Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE)
    • Encouraged school based curriculum development through a teacher designed syllabus.
    • Increased pressure on schools to divide students between academic and non academic streams.
    • GCE students were placed into different groups from CSE students.
  • Education (Work Experience) Act

    Education (Work Experience) Act
    • An Act to enable education authorities to arrange for children under school-leaving age to have work experience, as part of their education.
  • Education Reform Act

    Education Reform Act
    • Act was presented as giving power to the schools and took power away from the LEA's and the schools gave all the power to the secretary of state.
    • Provides a basic curriculum to be taught in all schools.
    • The NC would consist of three core subjects: English, Maths and Science, 6 foundation subjects: history, geography, technology, music, art and pe, plus a modern language.
  • GCSE's

    GCSE's
    • First GCSE examinations took place in 1988.
    • They replaced GCE O-level and the CSE.
  • Ofsted

    Ofsted
    • The office for standards in education, childrens services and skills.
    • Report directly ro parliament however is independent and impartial.
    • They inspect and regulate services which care for young people and those providing education and skills for learners for all ages.
  • The Youth Sport Trust

    The Youth Sport Trust
    Is an independent charity devoted to changing young peoples live through sport.
    Aiming to:
    - give every child a sporting start in life through high quality PE and sport in primary schools.
    - Ensure all young people have a sporting chance by developing opportunites for those with SEND
    - Support all young people to achieve their sporting best in school and their personal best in life.
  • BTEC

    BTEC
    Edexcel was formed by the merge of BTEC and the University of London Examination and Assessment council in 1996.
    Edexcell run BTEC vocational qualifications that are work related and suitble for a wide range of learners, built to accomodate the needs of employers and progression to University.
  • Labour Government

    Labour Government
    On 2nd May 1997, Tony Blair succeeded John Major and officially become the Prime Minister.
    - Blair wanted to create a culture of ‘prizes for all’ in PE.- This resulted in Labour taking out competitive sports such as athletics events on sports day. i.e. running races.
  • Banners Gate Primary School

    Banners Gate Primary School
    • Attended here from 4 to 11 years of age.
    • Had a great opportunity to take part in many sports through good teachers who had a passion for PE.
  • School Sports Partnerships

    School Sports Partnerships
    The school sport partnerships programme was launched in September 2000.
    The aim of this programme was to increase the percentage of 5 - 16 year old school children in England who spend a minimum od 2 hours each week participating in high quality PE and school sport.
  • Every Child Matters

    Every Child Matters
    The aims were to:
    - ensure every child has a chance to fulfil their potential by reducing levels of educational failure, ill health, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, abuse and neglect.
    - being healthy: enjoying good physical and mental health and living a healthy lifestyle.
    - staying safe: being protected from harm and neglect.
    - Enjoying and achieving: getting the most out of life and developing the skills for adulthood.
  • The Streetly School

    The Streetly School
    • Studied here from age 11 to 16 years old.
    • Streetly was a specialist sports college.
    • The school really thrived in PE and I was really fortunate to have support when playing/training for a footbal academy.
    • Left school with 13 GCSE's.
  • National Curriculum

    National Curriculum
    Learning and underaking activitites in PE contribute to achievement of the curriculum aims for all young people to become:
    - Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve.
    - Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives.
    - Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society.
  • Birmingham Metropolitan College

    Birmingham Metropolitan College
    • Left schools to do a BTEC National Diploma in Sports and Exercise Sciences.
    • Played in the colleges football academy in which we won various competitions to represent West Midlands in the National Championships at Loughbourgh University.
    • Had trials for the England College team.
    • Had every opportunity to try a variety of different sports.
    • Left college with a triple distinction (equivalent to 3 A Levels).
  • The Coalition Government

    The Coalition Government
    • Conservation and Liberal Democrat Coalition was confirmed with David Cameron as Prime Minister and Nick Clegg as his deputy.
    • Michael Gove was appointed secretary of state for education. Education Policies:
    • Expansion of academies
    • Creation of free schools
    • Drastic budget cuts
    • Scrapping the primary curriculum, school sports partnerships.
    • fewer places in higher education and increased tuition fees.
  • Increase in University Tuition Fees

    Increase in University Tuition Fees
    In November 2010, Vince Cable proposed a tripling of course fees to £9000.
    This was made official on the 9th December when the measure was approved by 21 votes.
    Students and pupils took to the streets in order to protest against the decision after the Lib Dems showed their true colours.
  • Manchester Metropolitan University

    Manchester Metropolitan University
    • Moved away to Cheshire to study a BSc in Exercise and Sports Sciences.
    • Gained valuable training and insight into the profession of a sports scientist.
    • Tested various athletes using various methods.
    • Completed my degree with a 2:1.
  • Appointment of New Secretary of State for Education

    Appointment of New Secretary of State for Education
    Nicky Morgan MP has been appointed as the new education secretary and has taken over from Micheal Gove MP.
    Responsible for:
    - Early years
    - Adoption and child protection
    - Teachers pay
    - School Curriculum
    - School improvement
    - Establishment of academies and free schools.

    The national curriculum for PE aims to ensure that all pupils:
    - develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
    - are physically active for sustained periods of time
    - engage in competitive sports and activities
    - lead heathy, active lives.
