    Supreme Court ruling that separate but equal is legal.
    Important because: To know where we have come from is to understand history.
  • Brown VS Board of Education

    This is the Supreme Court case that says that separate but equal is inherently unequal, officially desegregating public schools. which overturned Plessy VS Ferguson
    It is important because before this case it was okay to keep people of color and "whites" apart in schools.
  • National Defense Education Act (NDEA)

    Provided funding in schools to improve education in the US and compete with the Soviet Union, promoted post-secondary education.
    This is important because it improved the US in the field of science and technology.
  • Wallace VS Jaffree

    A law Alabama allowed for a teacher to lead a one-minute meditation or prayer. This was found to be unconstitutional even though it was voluntary. The plaintiff stated that his children were subject to religious indoctrination.
    Important because: The further shows the separation of church and state.
  • (IDEA) Public law

    Provided students with disabilities with free and appropriate public education that is tailored to suit their individual needs .
    This is important because before this law was passed public schools were not required to provided education to individuals with disabilities.
  • Universal Pre-school

    Georgia became the first state to offer universal preschool to all eligible four year old children not just those in at-risk families.
    This is important because more young children began to learn the basics that they will need to know in kindergarten.
  • Columbine

    This at the time was the nations' deadliest school shooting. Due to this schools increased Zero-Tolerance Policies, and other security measures that are still improving today.
    This is important moment in education history because of the introduction of the IARD tactic (Immediate Action Rapid Deployment) which is now used in an active shooter situation where the shooter is interested in harming individuals rather than taking hostages.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    Requires schools to give standardized tests to children of certain grade levels and consistently receive good overall scores at the school in order to receive federal funding.
    Important because: this act holds schools to a higher standard of teaching all children well, being more inclusive.
  • Meredith VS Jefferson County Board of Education

    This case states that race can not be a factor of enrollment for any student.
    This is important because the board of ed.s reasoning for including race was to keep the diversity in their schools without the use of integration.
  • Common Core

    This standard is a guideline to how far a student should be at the end of each year in math and language arts (English)
    Important because: This leads to more focus on students progress throughout there school careers.
