Education Timeline

  • Compulsory Education Act

    The state of Massachusetts passes a law making attendance mandatory and punishing truancy. This act required towns and cities to offer primary schools to all. Meaning that children and teens would have basic knowledge of English and math.
  • Plessy V. Ferguson

    Supreme court rules that segregation in schools and other public facilities was constitutional saying "Separate but equal". This ruling furthered racial tensions and segregation in schools and out in the public.
  • Brown V. Board of Education

    Supreme court determines that racially segregated schools are unequal. With this all races could attend the same public schools allowing diversity in the classroom as well as an equal education for all.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Discrimination against women, minorities and race in public facilities and employment was prohibited. With this act allowing for many teaching opportunities among a diverse group of people.
  • BiLingual Education Act

    Offered non native English speakers classrooms in their native tongue. This allowed equal opportunities and learning among students in the classroom.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    Federal law passed in support of special education and programs for students with disabilities. This act allowed for all people with disabilities to have the help and support they needed to thrive in the classrooms and among the other students.
  • No Child Left Behind

    The federal law provides money for poverty-stricken students in return for academic improvement. This act established higher standards by the state.
  • Sandy Hook

    December 14th, 2012, The deadliest mass school shooting occurred in Newtown, Connecticut at Sandy Hook Elementary. This horrific crime caused an uproar about stricter gun control and higher security protocols in schools.
  • The "Opt Out" movement

    In New York parents have the right to opt their children out of the state standardized testing. The tests are seen as added stress to the students and are not a good way of learning. The government wants to withhold funding from schools who "opt out".
  • West Virginia Teacher Strike

    Teachers in West Virginia go on strike demanding higher pay affecting 277,000 kids. This strike effected teachers with a higher pay but the students were made to make up the missed time due to their classroom teachers striking during the start of schools.
