    The earlier years

    During this time Education wasn't as important as it is now. There weren't lots of opportunities for poor children so most parents and families taught at home, they were not taught beyond elementary education because they were being taught to work in their family's business as they grew up. However, rich families gave more opportunities to their children. They were taught more than low level work and were showed to get ready for college. The type of education taught differed between colonies.

    The Earlier Years part 2

    Back then there weren't lots of schools but there were elementary schools and a few universities such as Harvard. the role of teachers came later on but when they did teachers were expected to be groomed and ready at all times and very professional. They could not be seen doing anything wrong such as smoking. for the school's curriculum it was mostly reading math and religion. For example, one of the colonies that settled in Philadelphia believed that in schools should only teach religion.

    The New America! part 1

    During this time period The American Revolution had just happened and people were very excited to come up with some new ideas. citizens living in farms we're a little bit stuck in the past however, people living in cities changed quicker. Schools were being used to set new society regulations. Schools where now teaching a lot less subjects on religion and more agricultural business math and reading two children helping them in their future careers. Teachers found a new way to teach as well.

    The New America part 2 ft Benjamin Franklin

    Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Frankiln played a big role in education during this time period. Benjamin Frankiln opened the first public library and opened the very first secondary schools and academies open to anyone who could pay tuition regardless of their personal religious beliefs. They also started introducing to schools to teach about the Americas New views on Liberty and freedom. England's old traditions and Views were out of the picture and they were bringing in a new America.

    The New America part 3 ft Thomas Jefferson

    The way that our public school system is formed right now is all thanks to Thomas Jefferson. Back then he passed the legislation which separated all the counties in Virginia into smaller districts. He also wanted for all elementary schools to be free of charge so they would be available to everyone. He also believed that in school was how they were going to get the people to believe in a democracy so everyone can get invovled. Though Alexander Hamilton wanted for the rich to try for president.

    Horace Mann

    We were moving towards the Civil War and the country was split up over political views. Through all this, Horace Mann was focusing more on schools. He started by normalizing teacher training as well as advocating for free libraries which was a success. He also raising more money for education, he got state taxes to fund schools. He also believed that schools should not be teaching religion because since funds were paid by taxes, a student would learning about religion that weren't his own.

    African American Education

    Before the Civil War African Americans were not given the right to an education because white people believed if they were given an education it would lead to a rebellion. After the Civil War it was still tough to find school because schools were segregated with races. The African American community put on schools in churches however since times were hard and they were not having much money, children very young how to find jobs to help out their families losing any possibility at an education.

    Better Times! Part 1

    During these times after the Civil War women had more rights more affordable pay for the same jobs as men. In the 1940s it became a law to go to elementary school. They also cut back the amount of hours that a child could work. allowing them to get a better education while still working and supporting their families. Teachers also fought for their rights,raising salaries and union they wanted more freedom in the classroom. Now there were greater amount of women working in the education feild.

    John Dewey

    John Dewey a philosopher had more ideas on the school system. he believed classrooms and teachers were not adapting to the needs of the children as time went on new problems arise and he thought that students should learn how to fix them and how to adapt to them. He brought in group thinking and real problem solving. As well as critical thinking in real-world problems. He thought that classrooms were not being flexible enough to accommodate to children's needs, abilities and interests.

    Maria Montessori

    Maria Montessori made history as the first woman Italian doctor. She also believes in the education system and she believed that even though subjects such as reading, math and sciences were important, she said that the sensory exploration is also equally as important as students need to realize that their five senses are one of their greatest things. As well as being social with peers, and adding new things to the curriculum such as art and muic and other creative outlets during class.

    Now!

    Now in the 2000s schools offer so much more. There's no more segregation finally. Financial aid and scholarships are offered to the students that aren't able to afford good colleges. high schools offer great Academy choices and career decisions. Even though our funding could be higher, teachers pay should be higher but students now have great experiences and thanks to all of these important people we have things like group projects, creative classes and most of all public schools for everyone.
