    In 2012, Harvard and MIT launched edX, which was a program that delivered free university online courses globally.
  • LMS adoption surges

    Canvas became very popular in classrooms around this time, as it grew the most in this year. Canvas by this time had over 9 million users. Moodle was also becoming more popular around this time as well.
  • Google Classroom releases

    Google Classroom quickly became popular amongst teachers and scholars. It was designed to reduce paperwork and give teachers streamline communication with their students.
  • ESSA law passed

    The Every Student Succeeds Act was passed in 2015. It was an Act that was created to fund public schools and universities for digital learning and ed-tech technology.
  • ClassVR

    Virtual reality tools became useful in classrooms and online learning. ClassVR was an example of this as it was interactive learning through immersive tech.
  • Honorlock

    Although Honorlock was released in 2014, it became widespread in 2018 over the nation. By 2018, Honorlock was implemented in various online courses at schools and universities across the globe.

    By 2019, Edtech began to embrace adaptive AI, learning analytics, and big data to improve student learning. AR/VR also became more mainstream in education along with AI.

    With COVID-19 shutting down schools across the globe, it forced schools to adapt Zoom, Google Meet, and other remote platforms rapidly.
