In 1607, three ships, the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery, sailed to America to start a settlement. They sailed up a river they named for their King, James, and started what was Jamestown.

In 1607, John Smith, the leader of Jamestown, was captured by the Powhatan Confederacy. The Powhatan were the Native Americans living in Virginia at the time. He was not killed and Pocahontas, the Chief Powhatan's daughter helped bring peace for a short time between the colonists and the Powhatan.

In 1619, the first Africans were brought to Jamestown. They came as enslaved workers to help with the cash crop of tobacco. This helped Jamestown continue to grow.

As Jamestown grew, more colonists took over Powhatan land. In 1622, the Powhatan fought back. This date became known as the "Indian Massacre of 1622". This started years of fighting.
