Early Childhood Education History Timeline

  • Sep 19, 1483

    Martin Luther (1483-1546)

    Luther made a big impact during this time when the catholic church was in control, instead he out the authority on the Bible. He believed that everyone could find their own salvation through the word of God. Now, children were encouraged to learn how to read in their native language in which today it is a priority to learn how to read and write in our own language.
  • John Amos Comenius (1592-1670)

    John Amos was known as the father of modern education. Amos believed that education should start during the early ages of childhood. He was the first to make a children's picture book, "The World Illustrated". He also believed that everything should be taught through the senses.
  • Jean Jacques Roussueau (1712-1778)

    He introduced the "natural" education for children. Encouraging growth without any interference or restrictions. He believed that a child's mind of is different from one of an adult and that young children learn through hands on experiences or activities. He also states that there is develop or grasp meaning according to their age.
  • Robert Owen ( 1771-1858)

    Robert Owen believed that there was a connection between the environment of the child that is influenced by society and beliefs. Owen opened an Infant school in Scotland for parents who were working in his mills, which led to an infant school opening in London. His practices really pushed the importance of early childhood education.
  • John Dewey and Progressive Education Theory (1859-1952)

    John's theory was to mainly focus not on subject, but of the child's interest. Children should be taught on living life, the necessities for living. His school taught household tradition like cooking and crafts. He also enlisted that children not memorize materials being taught, but rather to understand the relationship.
  • Maria Montessori (1870-1952)

    Maria believed that children were able to learn by sensory experiences. Also, that materials were to meet the child's learning phase.
  • No Child Left Behind Act (2001)

    This act wanted to set high standards and meet goals that could eventually improve individual outcomes in education. It requires that each state take assesments in basic skills in order to receive federal school funding. However, each state development there own standard. If the school has poor test scores, it will receive improvement so that all students can learn at the same education level as other students in the same state.
  • Prechool for all Initiative (2013)

    President Obama called on Congress to spread high quality preschool in all of America. This is basically reminding us that each child has a future and an opportunity to receive the education and skills in order to get it. The early childhood education would start from infant to age 5. It will provide each child all families with low and moderate income to the same high quality education in a preschool.
