    The Garden of Children (Kindergarten) was created by Friedrich Frobel. He based his beliefs and education on the fact that children are unique with unique needs. He also created Froebel gifts, which were educational toys made especially for kids. He believed that leaning happens through play.

    Maria Montessori
    The "Montessori method" was based around three key concepts, the environment, the learner, and the teacher. She believed that a child learns best in an environment that supports their interest. She would integrate helpful materials & strategies in the classroom for successful learning. She respected children at the level of education they were at. She referred to the things children were driven to learn as "windows of opportunity." She thought knowledge came straight from their sensory skills.
  • First public kindergarten started in St. Louis

    First public kindergarten started in St. Louis
    Susan Blow opened the first public kindergarten in the United States in 1873. This school was in St. Louis, Missouri. This school impacted early childhood education by introducing kindergarten to the public school system. Once this happened, the public schools came up everywhere and there 400 by the time she died in 1916.

    Lev Vygotsky
    Vygotsky believed that social interactions was a major role in cognitive growth. Vygotsky came up with the Zone of Proximal development (ZPD). The difference between what a child can do with help from an adult, and what a child cannot do even with help. In between these areas is what is known as the ZPD. Vygotsky believed the learning occurs in the ZPD, only.

    In 1958 after Sputnik went into space, it prompted the United
    States to offer a better education to its children in the subjects of
    math, science, technology, and engineering. This brought about
    the National Defense Education Act that introduced the federal
    government in setting goals for educating kids in America. This
    would have an impact on education by helping to have a specific
    curriculum for certain age groups and what they should be learning.

    The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) was created in 1965 to help low income families to get educations. It benefits schools in buying new and better materials and updating facilities. It also created school lunch programs to help kids get a meal for the day

    In 1965 Head Start was introduced. This program helps to educate
    young children who come from low-income families and provides
    them and their parents with assistance and education. This
    impacts education by allowing all young children the opportunity to
    get a good start in education no matter where they come from or their financial status.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    This act was originally created in 1965. However, George W. Bush signed it into a law in 2002. This act was to ensure that all students are at the same level in their grade. This requires school to do standarized, high state testing. The law’s original goal was to improve educational equity for students from lower income families by providing federal funds to school districts serving poor students.

    The Preschool For All Initiative
    President Obama passed an act in 2013 called the Preschool for All Initiative. It created high quality preschool nationwide. It promotes access to education for children under the ages of 4.
