The work of many scientists show that the surface of the Earth is divided into several interconnected plates. The outermost layer of the Earth , the lithosphere, is divided into at least seven large pieces , rigid. These plates move in different directions and at different speeds (about 1-4 inches per year ) and are falling together, away from each other . All the action in plate boundaries produces phenomena such as mountains , volcanoes and earthquakes.
