Democritus was born at Abdera, in about 460 BCE, although according to some 490. He was one of the two founders of ancient atomist theory. Democritus thought that a point would be reached where matter could not be cut into still smaller pieces. He called these "uncuttable" pieces atomos; where the modern term atom comes from.
