    In 1875 the first hockey game was played with only skates a wooden stick and puck. The skates were as simple as they could be as it was just a blade attached to the bottom of a players boot held by a string. The skate was the only peace of protective gear players wore at the time.

    In 1880 players began to protect there shins from being hit by sticks and pucks. In order to do this they made shin guards from leather or felt, reinforced with thin lengths of cane. Doing this prevented many injuries such as bruises and broken bones.

    In the year of 1882 hockey players started wearing gloves made from leather and animal fur. Gloves were useful as they provided protection to the players hands and also provided warmth.

    In the late 1800s the first goalie wore padding on his legs to make it easier to stop the puck and also to prevent inuries. Goalie pads prevented many injuries because inside of the puck hitting ur leg it would hit the soft padding on your legs.

    In 1890 hockey players started using elbow and shoulder pads as many people would get hurt as it is a contact sport. Shoulder pads were made by using scraps of felt and leather harnesses. Elbow pads were made of leather.
