    In 509BC: Rome was declared a republic after the king was sent away. Partricians took over and ruled over the common people. The commoners, or "plebs" rebelled and won more rights, then creating a new democratic instutution called the Senate. Partricians were the only ones able to become a Senator, but the people had a say in the republic. Men were the only ones who were able to become citizens

    In 700BC, Greece introduced a political system in which they called Demokratia, or "ruled by the people." Men who owned land (which were deemed citizens) could vote; women and slaves could not

    In 1215, King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta. This document had certain provisions in it to safeguard the rights of citizens.

    In 1755: The American Revolution created the first true democracy. Americans could vote, and the governments power was restricted so if one branch were to try to abuse their power, the other two could override it

    In 1789: The French Revolution was created in the spirit of Democracy. However, the revolution took a turn for the worse as its leaders actions soon imitated those of a dictator, They used the guillotine to deal with anybody who stood in their way, Napoleon soon took over and used his new power in an attempt to take over all of Europe

    In 1914: WWI started with the assasination of Franz Ferdinand, the Arch-Duke of Hungary-Austria. The unfortunate outcome of this was the death of over 16 million people and the global recession of democracy. WWI ended in 1918

    In 1939: WWII started when Hitler invaded Poland, and shortly after, France and Britan declared war. Hitler had a special hate for people of Jewish ethnicity, and took their rights along with the other countries he invaded. The outcome was a massive 85 million death toll. WWII ended in 1945
  • Universal Declaration of Human Rights

    In 1948: The United Nations created the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They stated that "human beings have the right to live and work without abuse from their governments" and "all are born free and equal, and have the right to life, liberty, and security"
