
Wisconsin DNR and Deer Committee working together to monitor deer population and develop new regulations for 2015

Committee member Kevin Wallenfang discussed total deer harvest of over 342,000 with the notion that deer harvest is trending downward. The DNR will be conducting a statewide assessment of deer killed by cars for the months of March and April. Together their goal for 2014 is to increase the deer population in northern units to achieve a safe balance.

Senator Terry Moulton attended the Wisconsin Deer and Elk study committee meeting at the Plaza Hotel in Wausau and discussed the crossbow bill. However, no action was taken at this time.

The committee motioned to carry resolution to ban baiting and feeding of deer from Sept. 1 through the end of hunting season. The committee also motioned to change the legal definition of albino and white deer, as well as allowing counties to implement new antler point restrictions.

Bret Marovitz, of Barron County, commented he felt antlerless tags should be increased from $12 to $24 or $30. The committee then addressed antlerless permit options for 2015.
