    David recalls developing his interest in film into a passion when he was 15. His love for film however was developed in a very unconvential way from most peoples. Unlike many people who see a particular movie (many times depending on the time period) which sparks their interest, Davids true interest and passion for film came from reading books. He would read books about film and their methods in which they were made and the different styles that were used.

    While attending the State University of New York at Albany, David became the president of the film society that showed movies to the campus during the weekends every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.. This marks the first time David truly exposed himself and others to a variety of films.

    In 1969 David received his B.A. degree in english from the State University of New York at Albany.

    In 1972, David received his Master of the the Arts degree in Speech and dramatic arts with a concentration in Film Studies from the University of Iowa.

    An Academic Romance

    During his time at Iowa, David met Kristin Thompson (who he would eventually marry) She was pursuing a Masters degree in film studies and the two had several film classes together. Around the same time David came to madison to teach, Kristen Thompson came to Madison to go to grad school. They eventually started dating and got married in the 70's. The two would go on to write two film studies text books together, and many other various pieces of writing about film.

    The first time David Bordwell ever came to Madison, WI was in Fall 1973 to teach film studies at UW-Madison. The first class he taught here was Com Arts 350: Introduction to film. At the time the class was taught in room 3650 in the humanities building to 400 undergraduate students. The first film that was shown in the class was Alfred Hitchocks North By Northwest.

    In 1974 David received his PhD in Speech and Dramatic Arts with a concentration in Film studies from the University of Iowa.

    Hong Kong International Film Festival Website In 1995 David attended the Hong Kong International Film Festival for the first time. He absoloutely fell in love with both the city and the experience of going to film festivals. This became an event he tried his best to attend every year. Until his retirement in 2005 David was not always able to make it. One of his reasons for retiring was so he could attend this festival among others every year.

    David Starts a Modern Day Film Society
    1997, David along with fellow colleagues Lea Jacobs and Ben Brewster started the Cinematheque, a coalition of UW-Madison academic departments and student film groups dedicated to showcasing films which would otherwise never reach Madison screens. It is a modern day "Film Society" like those that were highly popular in the 1970's on the UW-Madison Campus. Cinematheque Website In

    Although up for debate with his wife, David beleives he retired in 2005 after 32 years of teaching at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

    David Today
    After rietiring from teaching, David started a film blog with Kristen Thompson. David also attends several film festivals every year including Cinema Retrovato (a festival for old/classic films that have been restored or rediscovered) in Bologna, Italy, a festival in Brusells that he attends while researching in archives in Brussels, the Vancouver Film Festival, the Hong Kong International Film Festival, and the Wisconsin Film Festivals....

  • David Today Continued

    David Today Continued
    .... He still attends a film colloquiem every Thursday at UW-Madison where speakers come in to talk about various subjects. He is still involved with the Cinematheque and helps select films every year for the Wisconsin Film Festival. David and his wife Kristen continue to write books about film and are currently working on one.
