    Basil and Blum created the company and named it Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo.
    Balanchine was their Dance Master and choreographer. He hired the baby ballerinas: Tamara Toumanova, Tania Riabouchinska, and Irina Boranova.

    Sol Hurok booked their first American tour. It had been 20 years since the last time Diaghilev's Ballet Russe went there and America had little knowledge of ballet.
  • Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo splits into two companies

    After arguing often with Basil, Blum quit. Massine also resigned shortly afterwards and went on to start his own company.
    A legal dispute over the company rights followed, dancers were forced to pick sides.
    -Basil won the rights to the choreography and renamed his company "The Original Ballet Russe"
    -Massine won the rights to the name "Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo" but had to create 3 new ballets By 1938 each was ready for their return to the stage.

    Basil hired Lichine to replace Massine as principle choreographer and his company went to Australia. They spend 7 months performing and were a huge success in the country. This tour set the stage for new ballet training facilities in Australia.

    Sol Hurok needed another American tour and so he gave it to Massine's company.

    The two companies tour America

    Sol Hurok booked a nine month tour for both companies. They traveled around America via train, visiting towns that had never seen or heard of ballet before.
    Both companies toured with Hurok for two years, but Basil and Hurok started arguing with each other, ending in Hurok severing ties with the Original Ballet Russe. Hurok had such a large influence that the company couldn't find any more work in America. They had to go to Latin America for their next tour, as London was still not an option.

    France and Britain declare war on Germany. WWII begins. Panic strikes and both companies travel to America on the same boat. It is almost impossible to rehearse and dance on the boat yet Massine has his company, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, perform the same day they arrive.
  • The Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo's American experience

    The Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo found great success in America, they began choreographing for movies. Massine seemed to lose his choreographic touch as they got more and more popular and kept choreographing failures. The company hired a new choreographer, Agnes de Mille. She was the beginning of " true American Ballet". She choreographed "Rodeo" an old fashioned American story and it was a huge success.

    The original Ballet Russe struggles and shuts down

    The Original Ballet Russe found work in Latin America but the country was also struggling from the war effort. Food was scarce and the company exhausted itself trying to make a living. Hurok and Basil started talking again and finally arranged for the companies return to America but the worn down company was not ready for another tour. Hurok abandoned them once again. Basil started hiring dancers that were not qualified in an effort to save the company. Their last performance was in 1948.
