Operation Overlord (code name for Battle of Normandy) was originally suposed to take place on June 5th 1944 but due to bad weather the invasian was launched on June 6th 1944 insted. -
More than 5,000 ships and landing craft carrying troops and supplies left England for the trip across the Channel to France, while more than 11,000 aircraft were mobilized. -
By dawn on June 6th 1944 thousands of paratroopers were already behinde enemy lines. The invasian began at 6:30 a.m June 6th 1944. The codenamed beaches that were to be captured are Gold, Juno, Sword, Utha and Omaha. -
The british second army was in charge of capturing gold beach. The beach is about 5 miles wide. The first to land was LCT’s landing craft carrying tanks 20 of the 28 tanks struck mines. Due to the tide the obstacles that had been placed on the beach and in the water were now under water. By evening 25,000 soldiers had made it 6 miles inland where they met up with the canadian army incharge of code named beach Juno. -
The canadian 3rd army was incharge of capturing code named beach Juno. The beach was about 6 miles wide. There were more than 14,000 paratroopers, 110 warships and 15 fighter-bombers. The battle at Sword was like the battle at Gold. The British only suffered 630 casualties. -
The U.S. was incharge of capturing Utah beach. Utah was a last minute add to Operation overlord. Due to strong currents the landings were beset. The smoke from the bombing made it hard to see. Three of the four control crafts ws destroyed by mines. The battle had to continue. In the end the battle at code named beach Utah was a success and ended with fewer than 300 casualties. -
Code named beach Omaha was the second beach the U.S was incharge of. Omaha beach was the largest assault of all five beaches. 27 of the 29 “DD” tanks sank in the waters. The navy pulled into the shallows to destroy german fortifications. By the end of the day the U.S had suffered 2,400 casualties. -
