    Batista Took Over
    General Fulgencio Batista, a dictator known for the harsh treatment of his enemies, overthrew the government in a coup. He took control of Cuba just before elections.
  • Castro Takes Control

    Castro Takes Control
    On the 1st Fidel Castro fired final shots on Cuba and Batista fled the country. Castro and his group took control of the country and Castro appoointed himself head of the government. Even though he said that he would make modern reforms in the gov. he started to lean on Communism.

    President JFK startd the Peace Corps, an organization that sends tons of Americans to smaller, poorer countries to help raise their standard of living, to try and reunite the US and other countries together.

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    A group of 1,400 Cuban refugees -funded and trained by the CIA- launched an atack on Cuba and failed. They failed beacuse the severt of the invasion had been poorly kept and was all over Cuban newspapers. When the refufees arrived they were met with a force of 20,000 men. 1,100 of the refugees were captured and released with a $53 million ransom paid by the US.

    US Takes Action
    President JFK issued a formal request to Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev that the missiles be taken out of Cuba. Kennedy announced they would set up a blockade on all military supplies. The navy sent out subs are ships to form a blockade, cutting of all military supplies. The Soviets, in response to the blockade, sent their own ships, subs, and aircraft to watch the situation.

    Resolution to Missile Crisis
    After a week of sending messages between each other an agreement was reached between Kennedy and Khrushchev. Khrushchev agreed to sop sending missiles to Cuba, and to take the ones they brought out. Also he agreed to dismantel he launcing pads. Kennedy guaranteed that the US wouldn't invade Cuba and secretly promised he would dismantel the missiles in Turkey.

    When the Soviet Union starting "moving in" to Cuba, there wre more shipments that the US suspected were weapons. There was an increasing number of Soviet technicians and airstrips were being widened. Thousands of soldiers were arriving on the island and being armed. And the launcing pads were modified to be able to launch long-range missiles.
