Jose Martí a Cuban poeat and NY journalist organized Cuban resistance against Spain, using an active guerrilla campaign and destroying property. He counted on provoking U.S. intervention to help the rebels achieve a free Cuba. -

The U.S. battleships mysteriously exploded leaving 250 dead sailors and the American people enraged. -
The war is declared to Spain by USA
U.S. blamed Spain for the USS Maine explosion. In april 11, McKinley asked the Congress for permission to use force against them. The Congress agrees in 20th april and immediately the U.S. declares the war to Spain.
