Crater Lake was formed about 7,700 years ago from the eruption of the huge volcano known as Mount Mazama in the Cascade Mountains of southern Oregon.

About 1,000 years after the creation of the lake, the Klamath native american tribe discovered it, and made it their home.

In 1853 the first white explorer, John W Hillman and his crew discovered Crater Lake and the surrounding land, while on a hunt for gold.

In 1862 a well-known traveler named Chauncy Nye wrote the first published article about the lake. He wrote mainly about its deep blue color causing him to name it Blue Lake.

In 1885 a man named William Gladstone Steel first saw the lake he thought it was incredible and decided to devote his life to making it a national park.

Finally in 1899 he started to gain support from others who also enjoyed the lake and its beauty.

After years of hard work and dedication Gladstone Steel was finally able to convince President Roosevelt to make Crater Lake a national park on May 22, 1902.

In 1959 the lakes depth was finally recorded, which came out to be a whopping 1,996 feet.

In 1995 the now quite popular boat tours were introduced to the park and were instantly one of the top things to do in Crater Lake.
