In 1629 the first "general" court was created in Massachusetts Bay colony. "The general court, which functioned as a legislature, administrative agency, and judicial body, served as the central governing body of Massachusetts Bay from the colony's inception". This was the first of it's time in the new America.

In 1789 the first Federal Court was created by the Judiciary Act. It was seen during the time as tyranny and debated during the ratification of the constitution.

In 1989 the first Drug Court was created in Florida. This was a court dedicated to a specific problem (drugs) as was the beginning of specialty courts. Since then we have seen the creation of specialty courts for domestic violence, veterans, mental health, and juveniles.
