    Walnut Street Jail

  • Pennsylvania System

    Pennsylvania System becomes the first system in the United States to use an incarceration method that keeps prisoners separate from one anothere in a form of solitary confinement. This goes on to create mental issues for many who are kept this way.
  • Panopticon Design

    Panopticon Design
    In 1842 the Pentonville prison was built in the format of the panopticon design that allows all prisoners to be viewed by one centrally located person (Howard League, 2015). Howard League.   • Auburn System

    Auburn System
    Circa 1855, the Sing Sing prison begins to implement the Auburn method, in which prisoners are allowed to interact and work together during the day and are kept silent at night.
