  • May 15, 1215

    Magna Carta

    Magna Carta
    Description: A Charter agreed upon by King John that granted basic civil liberties
    Significance: This affected the social structure of England and made people believe that they had a voice and rights that couldn’t be denied by the king. It also changed the entire political system by showing the people that the King was not above the law.
  • 1295

    Beggining of parliment

    Beggining of parliment
    Description: After King Edward the 1st needed funding he enacted the parliament and gave power to certain nobles and wealthy men.
    Significance: This was a political change that was affected by the economic needs of the King. This changed the way that governments work spreading out power and eventually lead to the constitutional monarchy.
  • Oliver Cromwell's constitution.

    Oliver Cromwell's constitution.
    Description: After a military victory during the Civil war Cromwell took over. He then drafted the first constitution of modern Europe paving the way for a new government. Until he took over as a military dictator.
    Significance: This created a political change in the way that governments functioned and cemented the idea that people had unalienable rights that couldn’t be removed by a monarch.
  • The Glorious revolution

    The Glorious revolution
    Description: After being invited to over through the government William and Mary conducted a bloodless revolution that lead to them creating the first constitutional government under law
    Significance: This is the first constitutional monarchy and it creates a balance of power and changes the political environment in England forever.
  • The cabinet and the prime minister

    The cabinet and the prime minister
    Description: Shortly after the creation of the constitutional monarchy there was a cabinet formed to further balance power. This eventually became the position of prime minister.
    Significance: This was one of the final major reformations of the government making the political system more fair and balanced.
