    Magna Carta
    The nobles rebelled against King John, who had treated them very harshley. Magna Carta is latin for "Great Charter". It allowed certain rights to land holders. It also granted equal treatment under the law, and trial by ones peers. It also limited the power of the monarch. No one would be above the law.

    Mayflower Compact
    Plymouth Colonists realized they needed rules if they were to survive in a new land. The Mayflower Compact established a tradition of direct democracy. The Mayflower Compact was a written plan for government that was signed by 41 men.
