    California wanted to join the union but the south didn’t want them to join on the free side otherwise the senate would be controlled by the north. This caused the southerners to threatened to secede from the union. So the north agreed to have California join as a free state while they let New Mexico and Utah vote on there slave laws. The north also agreed to in force the fugitive slave act.

    The fugitive slave act was a part of the compromise of 1850.
    It mad the slave laws even worse,I basically made it illegal to help slaves in any way. This also meant that slaves were no longer safe in the north The northerners were now required to report runaways.

    The publication of the book caused a extreme amount of controversy. It was a brutal depiction of slavery, it truly showed the true evil of slavery. This was a huge step in exposing n slavery. It helped northerners to more heavily consider ending slavery.

    After the gorilla warfare started because of the Kansas Nebraska act, it caused 200 people to die which is why it was called bleeding Kansas. This led the senate to fight over whose judgement was best. This all went back to the topic of slavery and added more tension between the north and south.

    There was a case in the Supreme Court about the freedom of dred Scott. Dred Scott wanted to be free from slavery since he lived in a free state, but the court ruled against him. They ruled this because under us law he was property and the government doesn’t have the right to take away property.

    In 1858 Lincoln and douglas were battling for a spot in the senate. They had a chain of debates that dealt with the topic of slavery and where it should be allowed or if it should even be allowed. Lincoln lost there seat in the senate to Douglas but these debates put Lincoln on the political map and he started to be noticed.

    This election was a huge factor that helped start the civil war. The election was won by Lincoln because the democrats were divide over candidates. The southerners knew about Lincoln’s policy’s on slavery. This was pushing the south towards the breaking point.

    After Lincoln was elected the southerners decided they had enough. Six states seceded from the union and elected Jefferson Davis as their president. They immediately began to seize southern forts, Lincoln was trying to avoid war so he did not retaliate. Then the confederacy went to far, and fired on fort Sumter in other Carolina beginning the civil war.
