From ages 3 10 8 years old my mother exposed me to words using educational posters. Things like colors, numbers and children lullabies like "humpty dumpty". -
In the 3rd I really struggled with reading. I was super lazy I did not enjoy reading so I had a hard time learning how to do it. I was not exposed to books I actually enjoyed in school. -
In the 4th grade I was way below my reading level and was not doing very well on the ELA part of standardized test. I was in the public school system in large classes and not much tutoring to go around. I vividly remember being Summer school programs specifically for Reading. I would never sound things out I would simply guess because I did not want to try and would shut down. -
When I was moving up the 5th grade my mother thought maybe what I needed was something more structured and individualized. I was then enrolled in a charter school system. Well in just this short first year I had improved greatly. I was sounding words out and reading books in its entirety. -
So now I have this diagnosis and my mom tried to get me the help I needed. I was enrolled in learning centers and was able to get tutoring through my middle school. I wasn't exactly sure what dyslexia was at the time even with explanations. -
Through 6th and 8th grade I was shown books that I enjoyed. And reading was taught to me in a way I could actually understand however, I was diagnosed with dyslexia during this time. -
Now graduating middle school I had learned all the tools I could to help me enjoy reading. I had learned that reading things I enjoy is what encouraged me to read and read well. -
Starting high school I was reading things like the Hunger Games and The Gatsby where I was also able to pair it with a movie and I was so intrigued with books. I was reading every chance I got. However I was struggling with writing. -
I was succeding at reading and reading books I enjoyed and I was even in honors classes. The problem I had sounding out words had transferred into spelling out words. What I realized while reading and spelling I was struggling with vowels, the letters that had two sounds was where I was falling short. -
In high school I was able to get through completing assignments even graduated with no reading struggles. However spelling had still been a struggle. Now in college I am reading longer and more rigorous books I was able to understand the idea of spelling and getting familiar with different languages and way of speaking which expanded ability to read and spelling.
