    COBOL Programming Language
    In 1959 Grace Hopper invented the COBOL programming language. Over the next decade this language would become the most popular programming language in the world. It was used for mainframe systems and is the crux of many systems that exist even today.
  • The Cassette Tape

    The Cassette Tape
    The Philips/Norelco company first released the Cassette tape in 1963 in Europe and 1964 in America. The ability to not only have a blank cassette which could be recorded over at home, but also have music that was portable transformed the music industry.
  • Pong

    Pong
    Development of the prototypes for the Pong video game were completed in 1966 by Ralph Baer. This would become one of the most popular video games of all time once finally released to the public in the 1970s.
  • GPS

    GPS
    GPS was implemented and used during the 1960s originally as part of the Sputnik mission. Experiments consisted of using satellite navigation to monitor submarines. The experiments were successful and once confirming that the technology was reliable, received huge amounts of government funding in the 1970s.

    The UNIX Operating system was created by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie during their time at Bell Labs. The operating system would become one of the most popular in the world. The system is written entirely in the C Programming language (which was to gain popularity in the 70s) making it extremely versatile and easy to install on many different types of machines.
