Invented by Eugène Meyer, the larger wheel anabled the bicycle to travel at much higher speeds. This had a big design flaw, though, as if the front wheel got caught by something and stopped, the rider would flip over and land on his head.

This design had the rider closer to the ground, and although it wasn't as fast as the high wheel, it was sefer and it was easier to stop. The inventor was the English engineer Harry John Lawson.
