    Act that provided grants of land to states to finance the establishment of colleges specializing in “agriculture and the mechanic arts.”

    Morrill Act 1890
    This act required each state to show that race was not an admissions criterion, or else to designate a separate land-grant institution for persons of color. Among the 70 colleges and universities which eventually evolved from the Morrill Acts are several of today's historically black colleges and universities.

  • Joliet Junior College

    Joliet Junior College
    JJC was the first "Junior" or community college in the US, located in Joliet, IL. One of the reasons why JJC was started was to create access to education without the expense of losing community residents and at that time it was free, which was important because of the later hardships in the 1900s due to the war and the depression. JJC is now home to 30K students and has 180 degree and certificate programs.
  • Phoenix College

    Phoenix College
    PC was the first community college in Maricopa. One of the reasons that PC was founded was to create non-segregated institution for learning. Today PC celebrates its diversity offering many programs to it’s multinational students. PC currently has 17,000 students and 150 degree and certificate programs.

  • Phoenix College flight school

    Phoenix College flight school
    Phoenix College is home to many career programs. The school started a civilian training program in 1939, right before World War 2. In partnership with Sky Harbor airport, their pilots were able to practice in their airport’s fields.

  • PC; Dental hygiene program

    PC; Dental hygiene program
    As Arizona's population was at a rinse in the late 60s and early 70s and so was the popularity of the community colleges. Due to the increase of population it was imperative to add programs that expanded healthcare workers to the state. This started with the nursing program in the 1920s and the dental hygiene program in the late 60s.

    WWCC; The enological and viticulture program
    In the 1990’s Washington state was suffering through economic and agricultural downturn. WWCC started the enological and viticulture program to boost the local economy. This aided in the acceleration of the wine industry in WA and over 175 of the wineries in the US employ WWCC winemaker graduates. WWCC has 1200 students a academic year.
