CCs Combat Unemployment During Great Depression
As a way to help combat rampant unemployment during the Great Depression of the 1930s, "community colleges began to provide job training programs" (Kasper 15) -
Arizona Junior College Bill Introduced
In 1958, HB 238 is introduced in support of community college development. In 1960, Arizona legislation is put into effect, to allocate county and state funds to the creation of junior college districts. -
Phoenix College Joins MCCCD
In 1962, Phoenix College joined MCCCD, becoming the first community college in the district. -
60s - 70s Community College Enrollment Soars
Coinciding with Baby Boomers' coming of age, increased parent interest in sending children to college and the opportunity for draft deferment during the Vietnam War, Community Colleges see a four-fold increase in enrollment between the mid-1960s and the beginning of the 1980s (Kasper 15-16). -
MCCCD Colleges Receive Accreditation

CCs Partner with Community Employers
1988: "The Nationwide Commission on the Future of Community Colleges recommended that these colleges help build
communities by creating partnerships with employers and
