    Britain did not have the resources to continue to control the 13 North American British Colonies, so they gave them indepependence in order to establish a new trading parter.

    After World War 2, a large portion of the international Jewish population was relocated to Palestine (Isreal). The Palestinians there were granted autonomy and reside in Golan Heights, West Bank, and the Gaza Strip. There is still much friction between the two groups because of religious differences. The Isrealis are Jewish and the Palestinians are Muslim, so they coninue to remain very separate. The Palestinians were also very upset at being forced out of their homes.

    NATO was an organization formed by several western European nations, the United States, and Canada. After the Berlin Blockade hieghtened western Europe's fears of Soviet aggression, NATO was formed as an alliance in case any attacks were made.

    After WW2, with the defeat of Germany by the Allied Powers, Germany was split into two parts- East and West. West Germany was controlled by western forces and given a republic with a market economy. East Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union under a communist government with a command economy. Both sides, the Soviets and the Westerners, were determined to claim as much land as possible to spread their type of government and to keep the other's from spreading

    The Warsaw Pact was a treaty between the Soviet Union, East Germany, Czecholovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania. It was formed because the Soviet Union viewed the formation of NATO as a threat, which was formed because of fears of Soviet aggression. These treaties formed competitors of the Cold War.

    Quebec's situation, similar to that of Ireland's, was a conflict of cultural clashing. Quebec was mostly French-speaking. They were also Catholic, and wanted more freedom from their Protestant leaders.

    In order to discourage competition between many of the oil-rich middle eastern countries, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Iran, and Iraq joined together to form OPEC. It's purpose is to coordinate policies on selling petroleum products.

    ICO is an organization consisting of Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, most of the rest of the Middle East, and North Africa. It is designed to promote Islamic solidarity, and improve the plight of Muslims concerning racial segregation.

    Ever since WW2, Europe's economic status has not grown as quickly as that of the United States and Asia. In an effort to become an ecnomic competition, several Western European countries formed the EU. It's originial purpose was tariff-free trade between it's members. Since then they have accomplished many other things, such as establishing a common currency, the Euro.

    Scotland's desire to break away from the UK is based on their percentage of money they recieve from the European Union. The UK gets 1/40 of whatever goes into the EU. But after that, Scotland only gets 1/4, or 1/160. Scotland has large reserves of oil and natural gas, enough so that if they would be able to support a stable, successful economy based on these two resources. The only reason they haven't left already is because of the protection that the UK offers them.
