  • US and SU form an alliance

    US and SU form an alliance
    After Hitler invaded the Soviet Union the US, Great Britain, and SU set aside their differences and formed and alliance to attend the urgent business of defeating Hitler.
  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference
    In February, 1945, Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt met again. This time the conference was held in Yalta in the Crimea. With Soviet troops in most of Eastern Europe, Stalin was in a strong negotiating position. Roosevelt and Churchill tried hard to restrict post-war influence in this area but the only concession they could obtain was a promise that free elections would be held in these countries.
  • Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan created by Secretary of State George C. Marshall was made because Western Europe was in bad shape. It was to be used as a European Recovery Program and give European nations America's help to rebuild their economy. The Soviets refused our offer and went on to make their own plan but the Marshall Plan did weaken the spread of communism and increased trade.
  • Truman Doctorine

    Truman Doctorine
    Truman made a speech to the US public that the US would be assisting Greece and would fight the communist threat. This was the first american declaration that to fight communism. This elicted no response from Stalin and any change in american relations with the USSR. However, this showed how the US perception of the USSR had crystalised and thier change in mindset towards the Soviets.
  • Iron Curtain

    Iron Curtain
    The Iron Curtain was a way of saying that Eastern Europe was divided. At first Soviets refused to make any stronger commitments to uphold the Declaration of Liberated Europe. But the Iron curtain didn't challenge that, it just separated the communist nations. This caused fighting with the United States and the Communist countries or Satellite nations.
  • Berlin air lift

    All shipping by train, ship or on the Autobahn was stopped on the inner german border. Nothing was aloud in or out. On APril 16, 1949, the US flew their planes over the walls and dropped supplies for the civilians trapped inside.
