    The Allied leaders agreed on several matters but Eastern Europe was something they could not agree on. They had agreed on what to do with Germany but they struggled with Eastern Europe.

    This was a way to get rid of all Nazi practices and beliefs. Former Nazi and military leaders were sent to justice.
  • Threats to Greece and Turkey

    Threats to Greece and Turkey
    Communist groups that were backed by the Soviet Union threatened the governments of Greece and Turkey. This was the start of the many problems the West had to resolve in order to contain the Communist East.
  • The Truman Doctrine

    The Truman Doctrine
    This was a pledge to give economic and military aid in order to stop the spread of communism. The US Congress agreed to send millions of dollars to help Greece and Turkey.
  • The Marshall Plan

    The Marshall Plan
    President Truman believed if the conditions did not improve in Western Europe the people would turn to Communism. The Marshall Plan was used to help rebuild Europe and stop the spread of Communism.
  • Berlin Blockade

    Berlin Blockade
    The Soviets blocked off supply routes that would send food, coal, and other necessities to West Berlin. They hoped this would stop the West from occupying Berlin.
  • The Berlin Airlift

    The Berlin Airlift
    This was a solution to the blockage of the supply routes. Cargo planes started to arrive in West Berlin every 30 seconds to supply them with much needed necessities
  • Arms Race

    The Soviet Union and the United States kept trying to one up the other by creating nuclear weapons that would prove fatal. Hydrogen bombs, satellites, and other things were created and tested in order to have a show of power.

    The United States, Canada, and most of the Western European countries formed an alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). This organization was formed to counter Soviet power and control in Europe.

    In response to the formation of NATO, the Soviet Union and the Communist nations in Eastern Europe formed their own alliance.
