    Soviet Creation of Nuclear weapons

    The Soviet atomic bomb project was the research and development program that was accepted by Joseph Stalin in the Soviet Union to develop nuclear weapons during World War II, after seeing the United States destroy two large parts of Japan, they decided to implement them aswells.

    Yalta Conference

    Was the meeting of the heads of government of the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union. They came together to discuss postwar Europe, trying to make peace after the Nazi's had torn up Europe during WW2. People's freedoms were limited throughout Europe, the people of Germany weren't considered in the conference. This caused the Cold War because the Soviet Union was given control over Eastern Europe which made Western Europe believe that communism was expanding.

    Potsdam Conference

    Many of the important issues that were presented during the conference didn't get resolved which helped set the stage for the Cold War. Germany was divided into smaller sections, and was also forced to demilitarize themselves as they wanted to reduce the chance of another war.
  • Hiroshima Bombing

    During the final stages of WW2 the United States detonated a bomb on Hiroshima, due to President Harry S. Truman believing an invade on Japan would be to many casualties and ordered the new weapon to be dropped.
  • Bombing of Nagasaki

    This was also done out of fear from the United States in a way as there would have been to many American deaths, and they saw this as a fast way to end the second world war.
  • Molotov Plan

    This was created by the Soviet Union in order to provide aid to rebuild the countries that aligned themselves politically and economically similar to the Soviet Union's ideologies.
  • Truman Doctrine

    The United States was paying for the militaries of Greece and Turkey to prevent the spread of communism. Because the United States were helping them they didn't really get any more freedoms as they were receiving assistance and couldn't defend the Communists on their own.

    Brussels Treaty

    An agreement signed by France, Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg to create a collective defense alliance between the nations. It led to the modern NATO and Western European Union, it was introduced to show that the European countries could cooperate, which could encourage the United States to play a role in the security of Western Europe.
  • Marshall Plan

    It was an American initiative to aid in the rebuilding of Western Europe, in which they gave 12 billion dollars to rebuild the economies in Western Europe. This was also seen by the Soviets and they declared it an act against communism, much like the Truman Doctrine.

    Berlin Blockade

    Was one of the first international crises of the cold war, due to the amount of different countries involved with post WW2 Germany the Soviet Union decided to block the western allies railway, road, and canal, their only access to Berlin that was held under the Western Allies.
  • NATO

    NATO is an international military alliance between 29 North American and Western European countries. NATO was mainly formed to strengthen and unify the Western allies to prevent any further attempts from the soviet union to invade western Europe.

    Warsaw Pact

    This was formally known as the Treaty of Friendship, it as a collective defence treaty, signed in Warsaw Poland between the Soviet Union and seven Eastern Bloc satellite states of Central and Eastern Europe. The warsaw pact was created as a reaction to West Germany joining NATO, in which the soviet wanted power around, but it is also believed that the Soviet Union was just trying to expand with reasoning.
  • NORAD

    Norad is the first line of defence in Canada and the United States against air attacks. The Royal Canadian Air Force and the United States Air Force joined together for continental protect as they feared long range attacks from the Soviet Union.

    Creation of Berlin Wall

    Eastern Germans constructed the wall in an attempt to prevent fascist elements in building a socialist state.
